Chemotherapy related hair loss is just one of the "add insult to injury" part of cancer that many people will never even begin to understand. For women I feel its harder and I've seen some amazing women and I'm sure you have too, that make it through everything with complete grace.
The hairloss starts about 15-21 days after your first treatment and not all treatments will make you loose your hair. Loosing your hair can very painful and it feels much like a sunburn as it is coming out. It is best to sleep with a shower cap to prevent hair from getting all over your bed as you are sleeping.
You do get through it and there are countless ways to get through loosing your hair. Just keep in mind, you will live through it and thank god for the many things that you can do to make it unnoticeable (your beautiful bald head). First things first, you do loose your eyebrows and you may even feel that you lost your face; it's still there. Most people see your heart and how wonderful you are. Look Better Feel Good is a wonderful organization that helps many women with make-up tips and even on helping with finding the right wig for you.
In the summertime, with the heat, those wigs can get pretty hot and not to mention all the sweat! One fun thing to do is to accessorize with earings, colors and going to fabric stores to pick out some really beautiful patterns to make head wraps. It's the best excuse ever to accessorize!
For eyebrows, I ordered a bottle of She Laq at the suggesion of many of the women in my cancer support group. Some favor it and some do not, it worked great for me. I have heard countless stories about patients loosing their eyebrows from sweating (accidentally wiping one eyebrow off) or swimming so this is why it's important to have them kind of glued on.
Here are just a few tools to help you get a start on winning this battle:
